18342 Darrell LaRue <darrell_larue@s. May-14-1997 Brace Bit Maker Question

Fellow Galoots,

I have a boring whatsit...

I picked up a couple of interesting brace bits over
the weekend. I've seen Roy use this kind of bit once
in a while on the WWS.

Description:
Hmmm. My ascii art ain't up to this, so here
goes: There is a simple triangular centre-point,
and on one side there is a cutter that will cut
out the bulk of the waste from the hole, while
on the other side, there is a spur.
When used, the point enters first, followed by
the spur, which scribes the curcumference of the
circular hole, and finally the cutter engages to
clear the waste.

I assume that when sharpening these things it's
important that the spur hits the wood at or just
outside the limit of the cutter.

The first one has the following mark on the shaft:
(also says 1 1/8; cuts pretty nice even without
sharpening). Who was Henry, where & when did he
work, and how did his handiwork get into a bin
of rusty files in Mississauga?

     */     HENRY
   <--X-<<   BOKER
     /*

The second one of these is a "1 1/4" from Marples,
and it has that triple 'clover' logo (which I am not
going to try to reproduce here). The spur needs
sharpening; it tears the wood.

I also got a Millers Falls brace ("PAT FEBY 18-1890")
in pretty rough shape (ugly but it works), plus a few
more 'ordinary' brace bits.

Who, for Mother's Day, took his wife out tool shopping
at a flea market, and (seemingly) got away with it...
and who will doubtless pay dearly for such behaviour
on Father's Day.
