Galooterati:

For twenty-plus years I've believed that I once saw a sales display of
Sandvik files that included "coarse bastard" files. Not really possible
in the traditional system, where the sequential cuts were coarse,
bastard, second cut, smooth, dead smooth, dead-dead-smooth (mostly no
longer made). Well, I've seen it again! OK, not quite, but close enough
for government work. The Highland Hardware catalogue that arrived
yesterday fell open to a page that included objects described as "Coarse-
cutting bastard wood rasps." I don't know if any of my elation is
transferrable---
but for years I've believed but also been wondering if I really did see
those "coarse bastard files."

Tom,

Unlike coarse, bastard, second cut, smooth
and dead smooth, coarse bastard is not a
sequential grade for files: it's a job description.
Things are not pretty when you find it in a
sales display!
