160055 Bill Owens <billww@o...> May-05-2006 Stanley 624 eggbeater non-gloat
This would be a gloat if I'd bought a clean (nearly unused from the
looks of it) Stanley 624 eggbeater drill for $4 at a local antique
store. However, what I actually bought was most of one; it is missing
the threaded cap that would normally form the end of the handle.

This looks like a very nice drill, and, like all the eggbeaters that
I've collec. . . I mean, obtained for my shop, it would be destined to
be a user. Unfortunately the handle is just too short for my big mitts
without that end cap.

Thus the question that I put to the porch; how should I make this drill
usable? I can think of three options. Look away now if you are a Stanley
drill collector ;)

 - Saw off the threaded portion, and make a replacement for the handle
cap that has the appropriate tenon (or loose tenon/dowel) to fit into
the remaining stub of the handle (I told you collectors to look
   away!)

 - Remove, as carefully as possible, the cross-pin that appears to be
holding the handle into the main body, and replace the handle with a
homemade one. This would be a long-shot since I don't have a lathe to
turn the end that fits into the body.

 - Make a replacement cap with the appropriate internal threads. I think
that's well beyond my current capabilities, sad to say.

Of course I could also put it on the shelf until I come across a beater
624 and take its cap, but this is the first that I've seen in the area;
mostly we get Millers Falls and Goodell-Pratt. Or until I get a lathe ;)

What say you?

Bill, where it's still sunny (am I really in Syracuse?)
