151945 "Bill Taggart" <wtaggart@c...> Oct-30-2005 Where have I been?
OK, so in my defense, I have been really busy for the past couple of years.
I wasn't even fully subscribed or participating in the Oldtools list for
most of that time. On those rare occasions when I would peek at what was
going on here on the Porch, I must admit to not paying terribly close
attention.

I do remember at some point, sometime, somewhere seeing something about
former feral brewer Chris Schwarz becoming an editor for Popular Woodworking
magazine or something.

WELL.

If only I had been paying closer attention - or, perhaps more correctly, if
only I had had the time to be paying more attention. I don't really have a
whole lot of time now either, but I've been taking a bit of what little time
I do have to get out in the shop, read some of what's going on here on the
Porch, etc.

And what do I discover today?

Only what looks like just about one of the most perfect woodworking
magazines I've seen in a long time. In fact, it's called just that -
Woodworking Magazine - http://www.woodworking-magazine.com/index.asp. Now I
know that many (most?) of you by now are looking at me like "DUH, Bill,
where the hell have you been?" Well, see above - I been bizzy. But if you
haven't checked it out, or you've not been paying attention, as I haven't
been, then check it out.

I've been getting Fine Woodworking for a bunch of years now, and several
years ago I managed to acquire very nearly all back issues (all the way back
to and including #1) at one go (I think I'm missing only three issues right
now). Problem I've found is that even in the time I've been getting it, FWW
seems to be changing and doesn't seem to grab my attention as much as it
used to - I still like the pics of recent work, and some of the tips and
stuff, but it doesn't seem to really be aimed at my kind of woodworking and
tool using. I dunno. But now that I've pretty much got all 25+ years of
it, I can't bring myself to stop getting it - especially because once in a
while it has some really good content.

BUT NOW: I have just spent about the past hour or so reading everything I
could find at Woodworking Magazine's website, and I like it! I ordered the
two back issues that are available and also downloaded the first two.

Great work Chris! And I'm looking forward to more...

OK, stop throwing stuff at me - I know I'm clueless... I'll crawl back under
the Porch now.

Well even if you hadn't been busy, I think there are actually 2 Chris
Schwartz's on the porch. One is the former feral brewer who also
plays SCA whom I have met at Pennsic that as of a couple years
ago had an alternate persona as a software geek, and the other
whom I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet is the aformentioned
editor. Unless the gentleman in question is managing to keep a lot
of balls in the air juggling at once? ;-)

I am sure one or the other will chime in to clarify soon! But
I have say I am seriously thinking of subscribing to PW, having not
subscribed to anything for a number of years... Buying several months
in a row is kind of a clue.

I found myself in the same situation so I did subscribe to PW. I find it
very informative for handtool users and traditional furniture builders.

Also, had the pleasure of meeting Chris Schwarz (the editor) and found him
to be very knowledgeable, friendly and generous. In fact it was meeting him
that made me finally decide to subscribe. That was several months ago and I
an glad I did it.
