Porch-dwellers,

Did Goodell Pratt ever make Japanese wood working tools? I have
something that looks like a spear plane sitting on my desk, with
"Goodell-Pratt Greenfield Mass, USA" stamped on the ferrule. That
ferrule is two toned, mostly brass with about 1/8 inch of steel or
nickel close to the bulbous, wooden and otherwise nondescript handle.

The steel is 5 inches long with a 2 inch long blade. The blade is 1/2
inch wide, convex along the sides and top, but with a slightly hollow
ground sole. The blade is too dull to plane anything but Camembert,
which is just as well since the straight orientation of the tool would
make it pretty difficult to use it on anything deeper than a few inches.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

cur - who enjoys these midsummer saunas.
