147749 "Karl W. Sanger" <sangerkw@m...> Jul-20-2005 Regarding FS lists
Assembled,
There has been some complaints and discussions about FS (For Sale) lists
posted to the OldTools group.
I get the Digest version of the list and in scanning it this morning I may
have missed the following points made by others. But........
First, FS lists are ancient and honorable components of Galootdom. They
are original back to at least Digest 20.
Second, there was a limit placed on them by the original ListMoms - FS
Lists were limited to posting on the First Monday of each month. It was
called FMM (First Monday Madness).
Some limits were placed on FS lists in part because of the size limits of
the Oldtool list in the early days and because some nations charge
customers for email by the line.
But, when I first came to the the OldTools list, few Galoots used
eBay. Everyone waited eagerly for FMM and especially the FS from the
MoFA (tm: Merchant of Ashby -aka Pat Leach) and Akbar (aka Tom Bruce).
Third, there are Galoots who use old tool to build items of interest and
want to discuss the how-to of building them and there are Galoots like me
who build things, but joined the OldTool list because it was a source of
discussion about the tools themselves and originally THE source for them
over the Internet.
So, I hope FS Lists remain a part of the OldTools world. But, I see no
reason why they should not again be limited to FMM - the first monday of
each month only. And, for those capable or sufficiently online space
endowed, the use of pointers to web-based lists should be encouraged.
Besides, if Tony doesn't post his FS list of ANIWEB (Absolutely Nothing I
Wanna Ever Buy), how can I tease him? You go Tony! Many towns are now
much lighter and brighter for your purchases. But, when will Pennsylatucky
sink under the weight of all that STUFF you have brought there?
Oh, and besides my own verbose language, the worse thing I see on the list
is not the size of FS Lists. Rather it is the size of the copied text that
Galoots repeat when they reply to a post. Please shorten the original
message to a word minimum or a line maximum. Copying more than one line of
the original message is not necessary. The copying of an entire message
ought to bring Spittoon duty to the offender.
