At Andy's last weekend, my buddy scored a nice Type 15 Stanley #4. While at my
little garage corner woorkshop, I taught him the SS(TM) method, showed him how
to clean up the bottom by light lapping, and gave him some general pointers on
cleaning up the rest and final tuning. He proceeded to go home and complete the
job. While doing so, he discovered that one of the washers under the frog hold
down screws was apparently made from a measuring rule - one side had inches and
the other mm! Has anybody else experienced this? Does anybody know if it's
likely that Stanley did it? It has been said that Stanley never threw away
anything - perhaps it is true! Hi, Chris. How did the thickness of the washer
compare with the normal washers? I would guess that if it is the same, it is
original, but I have nothing to base that on, other than it makes sense to
recycle scrap, especially scrap already ground to the right thickness.

Although I didn't mic them, they seemed to be the same as the usual washers wrt
ID, OD, and thickness - nothing struck me as being different.

There are Yankee markings on the nickle-less nickled cylindrical area below the
wooden handle where the ratchet control button sits. I'll clean it up, see what
I can read, and post what I find. The screwdriver sure is a cute little bugger -
I couldn't resist for $7. I've already used it twice!

Thanks,

Chris
