Which reminds me of this head-scratcher for anal morticers...
When you set the gauge, do you align the points with the chisel, or
the edges?????

Visual representation of question for those who prefer to see the
question instead of reading it:

Anal morticer? Never heard of one, but it sounds worse than the rubber
glove treatment. I think Snick has been gone so long he fell over the
edge and I sure hope he's not trying this at home.

The tip (!) is to sneak the chisel to sit /just/ inside the points at
their very tips. In theory, the tenon should then be slightly thick,
but in practice it will fit nice and snugly.

~ BTW #2, always reference the gauge off the correct face of
~ each piece of stock to ensure correct alignment of the joint.
~ It's easy to mark a tenon from the face, but the mortice off
~ the backside, when it's late at night.

Ie, take care to mark a face side and face edge on all important work.

Ohh that sounds kinda painfull!!!

That depends upon the guage I'm ising
if I got my succulent sstanley morticing guage (still has ultra crisppy
tips) I set it to the tips.
whe using my semi-new Marples. I have ground and honed the pins into actaul
"blades" as once described by Jeff Gorman for standard marking guages.....
they are now thi enough that I can set the edges to the widlt of the chisel
w/out creating much "slop" in the finished joint.

So, as usual, the definative answer is :
"It depends...."

Hmmmm... Anyone got a recipe for humble pie? Does it include both feet?

Larry Williams

whos marks do this, but aren't Jeff's traditional marks; though they may
be after I think about this a little
