John Lederer is troubled by

<a pretty piece of claro walnut... I have had a splinter come off
<several times now when my "sense of the matter" was that no
<splinter ought come off. the wood just seems brittle. I am trying
<to match a broken off piece in a carving...>

Harden your heart and grieve. If the walnut is so frow you can barely
carve it, then the completed repair would probably snap off the first
time someone bumped into it. Listen to what the wood says.

Wincing in sympathy,
Tom Conroy
