I went to the flea market last Sunday and found a #24 Stanley transitional plane for $3.00 ... it was missing the cutter and cap iron. The wood bottom is in excellent condition with a crisp Eagle trade mark and the japanning is 75% intact. It is a prelateral and I'm trying to date it, but I'm having problems finding information on transitional planes. Is there any info. on dating transitional planes on the net ? I would like to thank those who responded to me on the questions I had concerning japanning. I also, do not endorse repainting planes or any other tool. The plane that I was concerned about had no value to a collector or user with the damage it has aquired; except to me,being my grandfather's plane. | |||

If it is a prelateral with a model number on the toe with the eagle then
it is either a type 5 or 6, and would date from about 1872 to about 1884 when
the first (tab-type) lateral appeared. There is a standard type study (Roger
K. Smith) for transitionals that is much like that for iron Baileys. I
assume it appeared in one of the PTAMPIA volumes, and has been in both of
Walter's books on Stanley tools.

I don't know about the exact date, but you paid the right price. I'm looking at a copy of an 1870 Stanley catalog. It lists the #24 at $3.00! Bob Ibach rdi@t...
